Safety Precautions for Meeting People Online
AthleticMeet.com wants to help you to meet people online with the same
lifestyle and interests as you for dating, workout partners, roommates,
correspondence, and other relationships. We hope you use the Website's
power to search out others based on particular preferences and characteristics
of your choosing and to open lines of communication with them.
As with any interactions with people new to you, common sense and judgment
are your ally. Whether communicating online or choosing to meet in person,
please take precautions to ensure your physical and emotional safety.
AthleticMeet.com, of course, cannot verify information that other members
post or communicate to you, and beware that anyone who can deceive, misrepresent,
or impersonate in traditional dating and people meeting forums can also
do so on the Internet.
AtheleticMeet.com hopes you meet the person of your dreams! To give yourself
the best chance for positive experience, please consider the following
safety tips for use in interacting with people you meet online:
- Don't Rush In. You should evaluate all the information available
to you in the person's Profile and attempt to have significant online
interaction prior to revealing your contact information or communicating
offline or meeting in person. A reasonable progression might to ping back and forth
online, trade emails and photos, chat on the phone, and then meet in
a public place. Most people meeting others online have the same concerns
and questions, so most are understanding of your need to inquisitive
and safe.
- Protect your Identity. Your identity is not revealed to any member
until you make the decision to do so in or by communicating with them.
Take care before sending a direct email as that will reveal your home
or work email address; consider taking out a separate, anonymous email
account at Hotmail or similar provider. Be careful as to if and when
you reveal your true identity, location, contact information, or the
like. Providing a cell phone number is often time a safer disclosure
than a work or home phone number; consider using the caller ID blocking
services available on most local phone service to further protect your
anonymity.
- The Meeting. Once you get to the point where you are willing to meet
someone in person, consider meeting them with a friend, telling a friend
where you are going and who you are meeting, meeting in a well-lit,
open public place during normal business hours.
- Use Your Judgment. If something does not seem right, if the
other person's story doesn't add up, if "red flags"
pop up, or they seem to be lying or if it seems to good to be
true, it might well be. Investigate some more before committing
or revealing. Better safe than sorry.
- No Pressure. Don't feel pressure and be wary of others who seek to
exert pressure on you to meet or to reveal your personal contact info.
Even though it is fun and exciting to meet someone for the first time
and to have emotions, please make every effort to be thoughtful before
taking action and careful in your actions and interactions. With these
precautions in mind and common sense as your guide, you are better prepared
to comfortably find the person you are looking for! Have fun, be safe!
